Heather’s Song of the Day: You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)

The summer after I graduated from high school I got a job working in the Junior’s section of a department store. Every couple of months we would receive a new video tape from our corporate headquarters that we would show on TVs mounted around the department. The two hour tape contained music videos and ads on a loop that would run continuously all day long, which means that I saw the tape in its entirety about four times a day, five days a week, all summer long.

You might think that after seeing and hearing the same music videos over a hundred times I would be so sick of them that I would never want to see or hear them ever again and for the most part, you’d be right. To this day I still can’t listen to “Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)” by Backstreet Boys, “Men In Black” by Will Smith or “How Do I Live” by Leann Rimes. There were a couple of songs on the tape that I still love however, and one of them is today’s Song Of The Day, “You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)” by Dead Or Alive. It was one of the few “retro” songs on the tape and while I was already familiar with the tune (and loved it) before I started that job, I had never seen the video. It’s a shame, because the video is like a mid-eighties New Wave time capsule; low production value, big hairstyles, shiny clothes, men wearing copious amounts of makeup and at least one superfluous eye patch. It’s awesome! Now, I pass the delight on to you. Enjoy!

And one more thing! Even if you don’t know this song, it may be somehow familiar to you. That’s because earlier this year the hip-hop artist Flo Rida used the song as a base for his number one hit, “Right Round.” We know which song is superior though, right?
