Heather’s Song of the Day: One Night In Bangkok

Today’s song of the day begins with an epic instrumental opening that would be right at home in the score to an Indiana Jones movie, but soon turns into a clever (if sarcastic) look at Thailand’s reputation of good chess and bad morals. The song’s music was composed by former members of Abba (Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson) and the lyrics were written by Tim Rice. You know, the guy who wrote the lyrics for Disney’s The Lion King? Luckily, the strange mix of songwriters worked on this song, Murray Head’s “One Night In Bangkok.” It hit number one in Europe and climbed to number three in the US when it was released in 1984. Alas, it was Murray Head’s one big hit in the United States, although he’s apparently still big in France. Anyway, I would love to learn the dance moves of the “chess pieces” at the end of the video. Enjoy!
